New York City. A city we fell in love with the minute we first set foot on manhattan soil. We have been here separately, and now that we have traveled here together, it has been an honour to share the experience with someone who understands (or at least tolerates) the complexity of your being. In the same way New York City is the city of Complexity. Of Creativity. Of opportunity.
When I view the photographs we took, a gush of memories, sounds and smells come rushing back and then we realise that the city has once again changed our perspective of viewing life. The fact that life isn’t simple. It is a complex map of different avenues and routes to take that will eventually lead to different places and different experiences. This is in no way a horrible thing. In fact, this is the essence of life, it’s unpredictability and it’s adaptability to any given situation.
Apart from the spectacular structures, this concrete jungle is much more than only it’s buildings (and it’s Lady Liberty). We were fascinated by the people of New York. As we observed the people through our lenses, it was clear that each person there have dreams, goals, desires, hopes. And then there were some people who seemed to have lost theirs. The hardship written all over their faces was something that could not be ignored.
The diversity of cultures was evident. We have never witnessed a city with so many different languages and different people. But they all had one thing in common. The city. The love for this glorious complex city. The fact that terror has brought the people of New York closer to unite and stand in unison.
For two weeks the city was our playground. A place to observe and to be creative. A space where we could breathe and let down our hair. And in the middle of this city we found ourselves, surrounded by reality. The reality that we are like the city. Complex. Diverse. Histories of hardships and filled with hopes and dreams to look forward to. We looked at each other and smiled. Because that’s life. And we are embracing it.
